Fiji’s cruiserweight boxing champion, Alivereti Kauyaca, is determined to secure a victory against Paulo Ratumaikoro at the Vodafone Arena in Suva on February 22. Kauyaca views this fight as crucial for his aspirations of competing in significant overseas matches.

Speaking to SUNsports, Kauyaca emphasized the importance of this win during his preparatory phase for upcoming titles. He expressed the need for two or three victories to position himself for other regional championship opportunities similar to his previous bout with John Parker. He also highlighted the necessity for boxers in Fiji to stay active early in the year to build their records as they age.

Kauyaca pointed out that many Fijian boxers often cite a lack of resources as a barrier to success, but he noted that previous fighters from Fiji have successfully reached the world’s top 15 rankings despite these challenges. He stressed the importance of consistency and discipline among local fighters, urging them to focus on hard work and utilize the resources available to them effectively.

He observed a common issue within the Fijian boxing culture, where athletes celebrate after fights by drinking, which can impede their discipline and consistency in training. Kauyaca plans to recommence his training upon returning to Nadi after a promotional event and remains optimistic about the potential for Fijian boxers to emerge as world champions.

In summary, Kauyaca is not only focused on his personal goals but is also passionate about inspiring consistency and discipline among fellow fighters in Fiji. His determination and commitment to hard work serve as a hopeful reminder that with the right mindset, local athletes can achieve great success on the international stage. This could pave the way for a brighter future for boxing in Fiji.
