Kaunikuila Basketball Club has made significant strides in its development following a successful tour of New Caledonia earlier this month, marking an important milestone for the Fiji-based club in the regional basketball landscape. Competing against high-quality opponents, Kaunikuila showcased both girls’ and boys’ teams in the 5×5 and 3×3 competitions, utilizing the tour as an opportunity to assess their growth, bolster confidence, and gain invaluable international exposure.
The results from the tour highlighted the club’s steady progress, with the girls’ team securing a commendable third place in the 5×5 competition and a second place finish in the fast-paced 3×3 format. The boys’ teams mirrored this strong performance, also clinching runners-up finishes in both the 5×5 and 3×3 competitions.
Ben Nasau, the founder and president of Kaunikuila Basketball Club, described the tour as a defining moment for the club. He stated, “This tour marks a milestone and a huge step forward for Kaunikuila Basketball Club and basketball development in Fiji. Providing our players with international exposure builds confidence, character, and belief that they can compete at a higher level.”
A notable advantage for the touring squad was the expertise of former Team Fiji coach and current FIBA representative Laisiasa Puamau, whose guidance proved crucial throughout the campaign. His experience in game preparation, management, and mentorship helped the players acclimate to the competitive atmosphere in New Caledonia.
Beyond the trophies, the tour offered essential long-term benefits for the players. They experienced diverse playing styles, enhanced their tactical acumen, and developed resilience through intense competition, in addition to fostering discipline, teamwork, and leadership skills off the court.
