Outgoing President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere addressed judges and magistrates at a Judicial Officers’ Workshop Dinner in Nadi last Friday, reflecting on his impending departure from office. He emphasized that, as per the Constitution of Fiji, he served as the appointing officer for the judiciary on the advice of the Judicial Services Commission.
Ratu Wiliame noted the honor it has been to interact with judicial officers during significant moments, stating, “You come up to the State House to be sworn-in to office before you commence with official duties.” He acknowledged that this marks the end of his term as Head of State, during which he has closely observed advancements in the judiciary sector.
During his remarks, he recognized the judiciary’s critical role within the government and encouraged reflection on past decisions and actions. “Reflection allows us to critically assess the decisions and actions we have taken, giving us the opportunity to reinforce our way forward,” he said. He also highlighted the responsibility of judicial officers as defenders of the rule of law and stewards of public trust, emphasizing the weight of their professional obligation.
