Welsh mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins, renowned for her powerful performances in operas and hymns, has taken a creative leap this Christmas by recording a classical reinterpretation of a popular song. The track ‘Golden,’ originally from the animated film KPop Demon Hunters, has turned into a global streaming sensation since its release in 2025, breaking records across various music charts.
In the film, which Netflix has hailed as its most-watched movie ever, the song is performed by the girl band HUNTR/X. Jenkins expressed her excitement about transforming this viral hit into an aria, highlighting the song’s inspirational message that resonated deeply with her. The animated narrative follows K-pop stars Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, who also serve as the world’s secret guardians. Its infectious music and engaging dance numbers have captivated young audiences worldwide.
Jenkins humorously noted that her attempt to learn some Korean for the song earned her “brownie points” from her children, aged seven and ten. She is set to perform ‘Golden’ on the Royal Variety Show, as well as the national anthem, during a segment that she describes as emotionally significant. “The lyrics, when viewed through an empowering lens, fit perfectly with the show’s atmosphere,” she shared.
Reflecting on her experience, Jenkins remarked that interpreting the upbeat anthem, which celebrates triumph over adversity and self-discovery, in a classical style was a pleasurable challenge. Learning the Korean lyrics, however, presented a particular difficulty, as she had never sung in that language before.
A heartwarming addition to the recording is the choir of children featured towards the end, which includes her eldest daughter Aaliyah. After a school day, Aaliyah joined Jenkins in the studio, and her contribution was so delightful that it made it into the final cut. “She’s excited about being part of this,” Jenkins said, emphasizing how sharing these musical moments with her children is always a joy.
As Jenkins prepares for the festive season, she expresses her excitement, reminiscing about her own childhood experiences with choral singing in Neath. Christmas has always been her favorite time of year, and the musician, filled with holiday spirit, eagerly anticipates celebrations at home.
