Kate Douglass Secures Surprise Gold in Paris Olympics

PARIS – Kate Douglass secured the gold medal in the women’s 200 meters breaststroke at the Paris Olympics on Thursday, upsetting defending champion Tatjana Smith and earning the United States their fourth gold medal of the competition.

Douglass finished with a time of 2:19.24 at La Defense Arena, 0.36 seconds ahead of silver medallist Smith.

Tes Schouten claimed bronze for the Netherlands.

This victory marked Douglass’s first Olympic gold and second medal of the meet, following her silver in the women’s 4×100 meters freestyle.
