Fiji’s national rugby team player Vuate Karawalevu has garnered attention for his impressive cover defense and kicking abilities in the recent victory against Samoa. Glen Jackson, head coach of the Fijian Drua, has indicated that there is a chance Karawalevu, who hails from Dravuwalu, Kadavu, may join the Drua in the upcoming season.
Karawalevu, a former captain of Marist Brothers High School rugby and a gold medalist in the 400 meters at the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics, will add strength to the team’s backline, according to Jackson. At 23 years old, he has previously played for the Kaiviti Silktails and represented Fiji Bati in the Rugby World Cup.
Currently signed with the Waratahs for two seasons, Karawalevu is part of a strong contingent, with 14 Drua players contributing to the Flying Fijians’ impressive 42-16 victory over Samoa during the Pacific Nations Cup on August 23 at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
Jackson mentioned that the Drua will hold their pre-season camp in Kadavu and will renovate their training base to create a better environment for developing top-tier players. The return of Joseva Tamani, who can play both back row and lock, is seen as a significant boost for the team.
Recent signings for the Drua, Peni Ravai and Inia Tabuavou, are also noteworthy. Jackson praised Peni Ravai for his experience and mentorship for the front row players, while Iosefo Masi is set to form a new center combination with Tabuavou. Tabuavou showcased his skills in his second test match against Samoa, displaying speed, defense, and determination.
New interim general manager of Fijian Drua, Baden Stephenson, has announced plans for a 10s tournament set for December 13, aiming to make it an international event that will include Skipper teams.
