Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica has revealed that he is under investigation by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) for perjury. In an interview, he stated that FICAC officers visited his office recently and confiscated his mobile phone, which he willingly handed over after consulting with his lawyers. The search warrant reportedly mentioned perjury, prompting Kamikamica to indicate his intention to cooperate fully with the investigation.

Kamikamica speculated that the investigation may connect with findings from a recent Commission of Inquiry (COI) report regarding the appointment of former FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali, although he remains unclear about the specifics. He expressed frustration with the COI’s conclusions, calling them lacking in evidence and reliant on hearsay, and he emphasized his commitment to clarifying his position. He expressed disappointment that the report made serious allegations without clear evidence and urged the public to critically assess its content.

Despite the mounting pressure and unsettling circumstances, Kamikamica remains hopeful about the investigation, aiming to clear his name and reinforce his integrity. He has called upon the Fijian public to scrutinize the COI report critically, suggesting that much of the criticism he faces stems from misinformation spread by certain individuals.

This inquiry comes at a crucial time for Fiji, where increasing demands for political accountability and governance reforms are prevalent. Many citizens are hopeful that the ongoing investigations will foster transparency and result in necessary reforms within the government, aiming to rebuild public trust in political institutions. Kamikamica’s cooperative stance, combined with the broader calls for integrity, suggests potential progress toward enhancing governance standards in Fiji.
