The Supercool Vatukoro under 18-21 rugby team has engaged in creative fundraising efforts to prepare for the Fiji Bitter Wairiki 7s Carnival, which will take place over four days at the Wairiki Parish Grounds on Taveuni Island. The team traveled from Nausori, Nalawa, Ra to Taveuni through the sale of $10 kaji playing cards, which offered the chance to win prizes, as a way to generate funds for their tournament expenses.
Team coach Ilai Nameke shared insights into their preparation while reflecting on their journey during an interview after a close pool match against St Teresa Naba, which they narrowly lost 5-7, following an earlier victory against Naselesele with a score of 24-0.
Nameke expressed heartfelt gratitude towards the parents and residents of Nausori Village for their unwavering support. He highlighted the significance of their fundraising initiatives, which included a special effort for a bag of chicken, showing the community’s commitment to help their sons represent the region at the upcoming Wairiki 7s in 2024.
While the team’s geographical isolation posed some challenges, Nameke noted that it also served as a catalyst for resilience and growth. He acknowledged the various hurdles they faced but maintained a positive outlook on the benefits that arise from their experiences.
Significantly, despite the challenges, there was a silver lining; one of the team members earned a place on the national under-20 team, showcasing the talent nurtured within the group. The Supercool Vatukoro team is currently placed in Pool 4 of the U18-21 category, competing against teams like Naselesele, Davetalevu, and St Teresa Naba.
This story exemplifies the spirit of determination and community support that underpins sports in Fiji. The journey of the Supercool Vatukoro team not only highlights their dedication to rugby but also the encouragement of their local supporters, which serves as a foundation for future success in the sport.
