The Kaiviti Silktails faced a challenging start to their campaign in the Jersey Flegg Cup, losing 22–12 to the Penrith Panthers in Round One. The match began on a positive note for the Silktails, as Joeli Railala crossed the line for an early try in the ninth minute. Iowani Mainalovo successfully converted, giving the Fijian team a 6–0 lead.

The Panthers quickly responded with Tuaomaliemavaitoelau Patea scoring a try, followed by a conversion from Kye Raven, leveling the match at 6–6. Penrith then pulled ahead midway through the first half with Cameron Kanaan scoring another try, leading to a 10–6 advantage as they headed into halftime.

Carrying their momentum into the second half, the Panthers extended their lead when Hokafonu Lemoto scored shortly after the break, successfully converting the try to make it 16–6. However, the Silktails showcased their resilience by narrowing the gap in the 47th minute when Fia Colati crossed over, with Mainalovo converting again to bring the score to 16–12.

As the game progressed, the Panthers solidified their victory with a late try from Haami Loza in the 71st minute, with Patea adding the conversion to finalize the score at 22–12. Despite the defeat, the Kaiviti Silktails demonstrated significant potential and will be eager to regroup and return stronger in their next match against the West Tigers in Sydney next Sunday. This promising performance may serve as a foundation for the season ahead.
