Marijuana cultivation is increasingly becoming a significant concern in Kadavu, Fiji, prompting serious warnings from local leaders about its detrimental effects on the community and the country. Ratu Apakuki Nanovo, the paramount chief of Nabukelevu, lamented that the once-esteemed agricultural identity of Kadavu has been overshadowed by the rise in illicit drug production, leading to shame and heightened poverty among residents.
During a recent talanoa session with police, Ratu Nanovo expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from law enforcement but underscored the pressing need to address this issue, stating it affects not only Kadavu but casts a shadow over the entirety of Fiji. The police commissioner, Rusiate Tudravu, acknowledged that Kadavu is currently in the spotlight due to these unfortunate circumstances and clarified that the goal is to raise awareness rather than stigmatize the island.
In a proactive response, the government has established the “Cagivou Ni Ceva Drugs Taskforce,” which assembles officials from various ministries to combat the escalating marijuana cultivation. This initiative coincides with broader efforts from the government and police to not only eradicate marijuana production but also to implement community awareness programs aimed at discouraging such activities.
These initiatives are particularly vital given that Kadavu has been identified as a hub for marijuana production with significant seizures reported recently, including a notable 3.5 tonnes captured last month alone. The police have pointed out that disturbing the supply chain, usually at the source, is crucial to tackling this complex issue effectively.
