Police in Kadavu are grappling with a significant escalation in drug-related crimes, amidst a challenging landscape where only ten officers are available to oversee more than 300,000 seized marijuana plants. This situation has arisen as National Drug Operations Coordinator, SP Ruci Nasemira, reported a staggering 93% increase in drug-related crimes on the island, contributing to an overall crime up by 55% when compared to last year.

Former Police assistant commissioner and Kadavu Provincial Council chairman, Isikeli Vuniwaqa, has expressed grave concerns about the vulnerability of the police force in managing such an extensive drug crisis, hinting at the potential for officer collusion in local marijuana cultivation. “When society is vibrant in drug activities, the police are always vulnerable,” Vuniwaqa cautioned.

In response to the increasing violence and drug issues, authorities have initiated a whole-of-society approach, focusing on empowering village structures and local chiefs, alongside crop substitution strategies to reduce dependencies on the illegal drug trade.

Despite the negativity surrounding drug crimes, there are positive developments in other facets of policing. SP Nasemira noted a commendable 9% decrease in violence against women and a 15% drop in child abuse cases this year, indicating that while drug-related issues are on the rise, law enforcement is achieving success in other vital areas.

This duality highlights the complexities of law enforcement in Kadavu, where efforts to combat drug crime are ongoing, as evidenced by prior initiatives under Operation Sasamaki, which successfully uprooted tens of thousands of marijuana plants through a series of coordinated actions.

The tenacity of the police force, coupled with increased community involvement, fosters an environment of hope that a combined strategy could effectively reduce both drug cultivation and the associated crimes, paving the way for a safer and healthier future for Kadavu residents. Continued cooperation between law enforcement and the community could serve as a cornerstone for both immediate and long-term solutions to these pressing issues.
