Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, has announced plans for additional funding in the upcoming budget to support the island of Kadavu. This commitment follows a two-day visit where he engaged with local communities to better understand their challenges and opportunities, particularly in the sectors of tourism and agriculture.
During his tour, which included visits to Vunisea Hospital and Vunisea Secondary School, Professor Prasad addressed several critical concerns raised by residents, such as staff retention, the need for more housing for civil servants, and the urgent requirement for seawalls to combat the impacts of climate change. Accompanying him were Attorney General Graham Leung and Assistant Ministers, Lenora Qereqeretabua and Naisa Tuinaceva.
Professor Prasad reassured the community that the government is dedicated to alleviating these concerns through targeted development projects aimed at enhancing economic opportunities in the region. This proactive approach echoes earlier visits where similar issues were raised, underscoring the government’s ongoing commitment to improving local service delivery and infrastructure across Fiji.
Furthermore, the emphasis on Kadavu’s potential, particularly in tourism and agriculture, reflects a broader initiative to stimulate economic growth and job creation. By investing in critical areas and fostering engagement with the community, the government’s efforts aim to create a more sustainable and prosperous future for Kadavu residents.
The response from the local communities has been one of optimism, as these initiatives are seen as steps toward collaborative development that can effectively uplift living conditions and address pressing environmental challenges. With continued investment and engagement, there is hope for a brighter future in Kadavu, benefiting current and future generations.
