The Kadavu women’s rugby team is making its inaugural appearance in the Marama Cup today, rallying under the slogan “NOMU liga nomu laga.” They qualified for this prestigious competition after a solid 19-5 victory over Cakaudrove in the promotion/relegation match of last year’s Royal Tea Ranadi Cup.

Lynda Tabuya, the president of the Kadavu Rugby Union, emphasized the team’s preparation and the expectations that accompany their first match in Division One. At a recent media event, she noted, “The girls are prepared as much as they can… it’s always about preparation.” The pressure is significant as they face the current champions, Suva, in their opening match at Lawaqa Park, which kicks off at 9am.

Tabuya shared positive feedback from the Kadavu community regarding the team’s participation in the Marama Cup, stating that the reception has been enthusiastic. Notably, the financial support from the Kadavu Provincial Council for the women’s team has increased to $10,000 this year, a significant boost from previous years.

This entry into the Marama Cup represents a vital step for the Kadavu women’s rugby team, not just in terms of competition, but also in promoting the sport within their community. The blend of preparation, local support, and the focus on teamwork sets a hopeful tone for the team’s future endeavors and the growth of women’s rugby in the region.

The journey ahead is exciting, and with community backing, the Kadavu women’s rugby team exemplifies the spirit of resilience and ambition as they take on this new challenge.
