Kadavu Women’s Association Raises Concerns Over Abuse of Kava Consumption

The overconsumption of kava in Kadavu has become a significant issue of concern. Luisa Duikete, head of the Kadavu Women’s Association, has highlighted that the excessive consumption of kava is causing disruption within families.

Duikete pointed out that many men in the village are neglecting their families in favor of spending time drinking kava. This behavior has led to financial difficulties as money is often diverted away from essential needs and the overall cost of living. As a result, many women on the island are left to fulfill dual roles, managing family responsibilities and searching for food.

In response to these concerns, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has called on village headmen to take a more active role in addressing the issue. Rabuka emphasized that while the government cannot intervene in every situation, the support of local leaders is crucial. He stressed the need for communal efforts to protect the community’s future and identity.

Rabuka reminded village headmen of their duties, which include ensuring the wellbeing and progress of their communities, resolving disputes, and coordinating with authorities for essential services. He emphasized that being a village headman is not merely a title but comes with the responsibility to enhance the lives of the people they serve.
