As drug concerns rise in Kadavu, local religious and traditional leaders have united to combat illicit drug activities. This initiative was spearheaded by Turaga na Tui Nabukelevu, Ratu Apakuki Nanovo, during a recent talanoa session that included representatives from the Fiji Police Force, the Roko Tui Kadavu, and senior government officials.

This meeting coincided with the launch of a new task force, Cagi Vou ni Ceva, dedicated to addressing drug-related issues through community-focused initiatives. Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu expressed that if left unaddressed, the drug problem could impose a generational reliance on narcotics. He underscored the importance of involving traditional and religious leaders in disrupting the cycle and protecting the island’s youth from long-term damage.

During the meeting, Tudravu provided updates and statistics related to Operation Sasamaki, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating drug trafficking across Fiji. He conveyed to leaders that the country faces two major challenges: the ongoing war on drugs and the necessity of changing entrenched mindsets of denial and silence surrounding the issue.

While visiting police officers in Kavala and Vunisea over the Easter weekend, Tudravu acknowledged their unwavering commitment and motivated them to seek greater engagement from the community. He emphasized that tackling the drug crisis requires not only law enforcement but also collaboration with communities, local authorities, and various government bodies.

These efforts reflect a growing understanding within Fiji that confronting the drug epidemic demands a multi-faceted approach leveraging community involvement and leadership. As seen in previous initiatives urging collective action, the hope remains that by building strong alliances and fostering cooperation, Kadavu and other regions in Fiji can establish a healthier future free from the grip of illicit drugs.

This collaborative spirit instills optimism for Fiji’s efforts in battling the drug crisis, demonstrating that with unity and determination, effective responses can safeguard the well-being of generations to come.
