Kadavu Rugby’s Remarkable Rise: Men Clinch Skipper Cup Promotion as Women Shine in Marama Cup

Kadavu Rugby has been on a remarkable journey in Fijian rugby, recently achieving significant milestones that exhibit the community’s dedication to the sport. Building on prior success, the senior men’s team has secured promotion to the Skipper Cup for next year, following their victory in the Vanua Cup. This accomplishment coincides with the women’s team’s recent performance in the Marama Cup, which has further lifted the spirits within the community.

The excitement following the men’s promotion was palpable, as expressed by women’s rugby head coach Etonia Nauro, who highlighted the prevailing happiness among the players. “For the ladies here in camp, we are so happy,” Nauro stated, emphasizing the collaborative spirit that characterizes Kadavu’s teams. Despite a mix of players from different provinces on the men’s team, the objective has been consistent — uplift Kadavu’s rugby profile through mutual support.

The men’s team celebrated their successful season with a thrilling victory over Navosa, winning 23-17 in the Vanua Cup final at Lawaqa Park. Josveta Bola, the men’s head coach, reflected on the extensive planning that took place over the past three years in pursuit of this promotion. “We thank God we have achieved it this year, and I hope we will prepare very well for next year before the Skipper Cup starts,” he noted, expressing hope for their future challenges in higher competition.

On the celebration front, Kadavu’s community spirit truly shone through as they welcomed home their victorious team with emotional scenes of joy and festivities. Events were held in Tavuki and Suva, gathering family and supporters to honor the rugby teams’ success. Lynda Tabuya, the president of Kadavu Rugby, played a crucial role in fostering the community’s spirit, which has proven vital in these achievements.

Kadavu’s rugby story is not only about triumph but also about resilience and strategic growth. The past year has seen promising developments, including women’s team successes in the Marama Cup and earlier victories. For instance, the women’s team won the Ranadi Cup last year and recently battled beyond the quarter-finals stage in this year’s Marama Cup.

Moreover, Kadavu Rugby Union has continued to invest in local talent and community support, which are key elements in their ongoing narrative. The spirit of collaboration, combined with a clear vision for development at both local and national levels, indicates a bright future for Kadavu rugby.

As the teams prepare for upcoming competitions, the heartbeat of the Kadavu community, vibrant with hope and ambition, continues to resonate strongly. This collective effort serves not only to elevate the teams but also to inspire future generations to embrace the sport, further enriching the rugby legacy in Kadavu.
