Kadavu Rugby Union president Lynda Tabuya has set an ambitious goal for the women’s rugby team: to clinch the ANZ Marama Championship title this season. After triumphing in last season’s Royal Tea Ranadi Cup, the Kadavu team is eager to make its mark in this upcoming championship.
Tabuya expressed confidence in her team, stating, “I have every faith in our women’s team that we will win the Marama Cup.” The team will face formidable opponents, including current champions Suva, as they vie for the title against various urban teams.
In addition to preparing for the championship, Tabuya is also focusing on building the men’s team. She has called on interested players to attend trials scheduled for July. Her efforts have recently included a visit to Kadavu to ensure proper club registration, a requirement from the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) for compliance.
Moreover, the Kadavu Rugby Union has planned a Super Week featuring FRU officials who will conduct coaching and refereeing clinics, as well as training management workshops. “We’re grateful to FRU for their support,” Tabuya noted.
Five players from the women’s team are currently participating in the Na Soko tournament, which spans seven weeks and could lead to national squad selections for the Women’s Rugby World Cup later this year. As the season officially begins in August, Tabuya emphasized the importance of getting foundational aspects right, particularly compliance with the FRU.
Additionally, the Kadavu Rugby Union is initiating a fundraising drive, with plans to repeat a successful raffle that offered a boat and engine as the main prize, a practical reward for the rural and maritime community in Kadavu. Tabuya expressed hope that diaspora members will support the initiative, further integrating community involvement.
She also took the opportunity to support the Vunisea Secondary School rugby boys’ team as they prepare for the maritime zone competition, which is a part of their build-up leading to the prestigious Deans competition.
Tabuya’s commitment to uplifting the local rugby scene and supporting young athletes highlights a community-driven spirit that is not only focused on winning titles but also fostering growth within the sport. This dedication bodes well for the future of rugby in Kadavu, encouraging hope and enthusiasm among players and supporters alike.
