The Ministry of Fisheries is currently looking into a significant fish kill in Kadavu, following multiple reports and photographic documentation of dead reef fish spotted across various villages along the Nasegai and Nabukelevu-i-Ra coastlines. This incident came to light in the first week of February.
Dr. Victor Bonito, a researcher with Reef Explorer Fiji based in Votua, Tikina Korolevu-i-wai in the Nadroga-Navosa province, noted that similar occurrences have been recorded in marine protected regions along the Coral Coast. He also indicated that the area is experiencing severe coral bleaching, which poses additional threats to marine life and ecosystems.
The Ministry is actively encouraging local coastal communities to promptly report any further sightings. Authorities have issued a strong warning that for health and safety reasons, consuming, selling, or feeding the deceased fish to animals is prohibited.
This investigation highlights the ongoing challenges faced in marine conservation and the need for community vigilance in reporting ecological issues. The response from the Ministry and the collaboration with marine researchers underscore the commitment to safeguarding marine biodiversity and addressing the impacts of environmental changes in Fiji’s waters.
