Rising sea levels and changing weather patterns are gradually transforming life in the Nakasaleka district of Kadavu, prompting residents to recognize that their choices regarding development can significantly impact their futures.

Many villagers are observing subtle but concerning changes in their environment. Rovuama Walai, the district representative, has called for careful consideration as new development projects are proposed for the island. Speaking in Fijian, Walai expressed the community’s cautious approach toward climate change, stating, “For us here, we have always been cautious about climate change, it is something that is starting to appear slowly.” He stressed the importance of being selective regarding the types of developments that are permitted, as they could have unforeseen negative consequences.

Walai stressed that developments that may initially appear beneficial could also pose risks. In light of this, the introduction of the Kavala Greenhouse initiative has sparked discussions among farmers, fishermen, and families about adapting their practices. They are focusing on strategies such as modifying planting seasons and safeguarding vulnerable coastal regions.

He noted, “With the climate change arriving at our shores today, it will all depend on our decisions. The choices we make will lead to changes, and it is up to us to plan for development in a way that mitigates the effects of climate change that are beginning to impact our shores.” This proactive stance illustrates the community’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development as they navigate the challenges posed by climate change.
