A new business initiative has been launched in the Kabara region, comprising six villages within the Lau Islands, following the completion of a comprehensive development program in Valelevu, Nasinu earlier this week. The initiative was proudly highlighted by Ponijasi Saulekaleka, the head of the local cooperative, who emphasized the commendable example this project sets for sustainable business practices using local resources effectively.

This local enterprise aims to sustain and promote the unique cultural identities of the communities in Kabara, focusing on the production of traditional goods and services. The cooperative model underlines the importance of collaboration and resource management, aiming to empower community members, particularly the youth, by providing avenues for economic development and skills improvement.

Saulekaleka remarked that significant strides have been made over the past year in establishing successful businesses in the area. The project reflects the determination of the locals to retain and enhance their cultural heritage through entrepreneurship while also generating a steady income stream. There is a collective effort to develop a cooperative business model that prioritizes community engagement and helps train individuals in various artisanal crafts, ensuring the knowledge is passed down through generations.

Additionally, support has come from the government, with the Minister for Community Development acknowledging the efforts of local leaders and their focus on fostering local talent among the youth. He highlighted the need for continued education and upskilling to ensure that productive practices are preserved, especially where technological advancements are concerned.

The cooperative in Kabara encompasses six villages: Nakuro, Naikeleyaga, Nukuleka, Tokalau, Vuanigiagia, and Namuka, all of which have come together to support the venture aimed at enhancing local business through shared resources and mutual support.

The government will continue to assist these small businesses by providing necessary resources, training, and marketing support to strengthen their operations. This optimistic venture is set to boost not only the local economy but also the cultural identity of the Kabara region, showcasing the resilience and collaborative spirit of its people.

Overall, this collaborative effort reflects a positive trend toward community-driven development and the belief that by working together, local communities can achieve significant economic growth while preserving their unique cultural heritage.
