A new cooperative initiative has been launched in the Kabara area, comprising six villages in the Lau Islands, following a significant meeting in Valelevu, Nasinu, this past Monday. Ponijasi Saulekaleka, the leader of the cooperative, emphasized the importance of harnessing local resources to drive development and economic growth in the region.
Saulekaleka noted that the cooperative’s primary goal is to preserve and promote local products and crafts, which have distinct cultural significance to the Kabara community. He reported that their business model, which has been operational for a while, has seen considerable success and is set to improve further.
The cooperative’s establishment is seen as vital for fostering local entrepreneurship and skill development, particularly among youth and the elderly. They aim to offer training and resources that promote sustainable practices and the effective utilization of local resources.
The community of Kabara includes the villages of Naikeleyaga, Tokalau, Lomati, and Udu, with memberships extending to the surrounding islands. The local leaders expressed gratitude towards the government, particularly for the Minister for Cooperative Development and Fisheries, Alitia Bainivalu, who was present during the launch.
Overall, the cooperative initiative promises not only to strengthen community ties and economic resilience but also serves as a hopeful model for other regions. By focusing on cooperation and sustainable practices, it provides an opportunity for local talents and businesses to thrive, ensuring cultural heritage is preserved and passed on to future generations.
This local cooperative movement showcases the potential for villages to uplift their economies while emphasizing collaboration and community spirit, which can inspire similar efforts in other areas facing economic challenges.
