The Vanua o Kabara convened in Suva on Saturday to celebrate Filimone Jitoko’s recent appointment as Speaker of Parliament. This event was marked by a traditional vakasenuqanuqa ceremony, highlighting a significant milestone in both Jitoko’s personal journey and for the Kabara community.
During the gathering, Mr. Jitoko emphasized the vital role of education in transforming the lives of the Kabara people. He stated, “If there is one thing I would like to stress, it is the importance of education.” He acknowledged that education has been a gateway for many individuals from Kabara to achieve prominent positions within the nation, setting a path for future generations.
Mr. Jitoko urged the various yavusa (clans) within the community to take collective action towards supporting the education of their children. He suggested the creation of an education trust fund aimed at helping students attain the highest academic achievements, which he believes could lead to significant benefits for the community.
In his inspirational message, Mr. Jitoko referenced the metaphor of a three-legged stool, signifying the essential balance of physical, mental, and spiritual growth. He underscored the importance of integrating these values into the nurturing of every individual.
Steward chief Ilaitia Maraiwai echoed Mr. Jitoko’s sentiments, remarking that his evolution from a rural upbringing to esteemed roles in law and diplomacy should motivate the youth of Kabara. He noted, “Nothing comes easy. There will be struggles, tears, and sweat, but with perseverance, you will reach the top of the mountain.”
Mr. Jitoko’s extensive career highlights his dedication and excellence. His service includes roles such as Fiji’s solicitor-general from 1987 to 1993, legal advisor to the Great Council of Chiefs, Cabinet Secretary, and High Commissioner to the UK, as well as Chief Justice in Nauru in 2017. Most recently, he returned to Fiji as a judge of the Court of Appeal before assuming his role as Speaker of Parliament.
His impressive accomplishments serve as a beacon of inspiration for the Kabara community and all Fijians, demonstrating that with hard work and commitment, no dream is too distant to achieve.
