Officers from the Fiji Detector Dog Unit and the Western Division Dog Unit recently apprehended three individuals in connection with a suspected case of illegal drug possession. This operation was initiated following reports of disturbances in the area.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, highlighted the expanded use of K9 capabilities, stating that they are not only utilized for specific drug-related tasks but also integrated into routine law enforcement activities. Early in the morning, while patrolling Saweni, the Western Division Dog Unit responded to a report of troublesome behavior. Upon their arrival, they noted unusual activity from the occupants, which prompted them to call for additional support from the Fiji Detector Dog Unit.
A subsequent search of the premises uncovered clear plastic bags containing substances believed to be methamphetamine. The primary suspect, identified as the owner of the residence, fled the scene, and authorities are currently working to locate him.
In a separate incident in Labasa, patrol officers discovered an unattended bag at the local market, which contained several packets of green leaves suspected to be marijuana.
ACP Driu emphasized a collaborative approach among various police units, committing resources to enhance operations aimed at combating both minor and major crimes. This coordinated effort reflects a proactive stance to ensure public safety and maintain order in the community.
