The Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu, commended K9 Tiny and her handler from the Fiji Detector Dog Unit (DFDDU) for their outstanding efforts in combating drug trafficking during a recent operation in December 2024. K9 Tiny’s determination was essential in successfully detecting illicit substances, particularly methamphetamine.
The Commissioner underscored the collaboration between various agencies, including the Fiji Detector Dog Unit, Police Dog Unit, Fiji Revenue and Customs Service, and New Zealand Police. This partnership has enhanced the effectiveness of operations against drugs and transnational crime. From July 2023 to January 2025, the DFDDU recorded an impressive 417 seizures, resulting in 363 arrests, with marijuana being the most frequently seized substance, followed by methamphetamine and cocaine.
“Given the intelligence and resources available, we must stay proactive in dismantling the illicit drug trade,” stated Commissioner Tudravu. He emphasized the importance of being responsive to community needs and adapting accordingly.
He also extended gratitude to the New Zealand Police for their continuous support in supplying specialized training and K9 units. The Commissioner encouraged the members of the DFDDU and Police Dog Unit to innovate further in their strategic operations.
The Fiji Detector Dog Unit represents a significant collaborative effort between the Fiji Police Force, Fiji Revenue and Customs Service, and New Zealand Police, aiming to bolster the nation’s capacity in detecting illicit substances. This initiative demonstrates the effectiveness of teamwork in the ongoing battle against drug-related crime and promotes a safer community.
In a hopeful note, these efforts not only highlight the fight against illegal drugs but also foster a spirit of cooperation between different agencies, showcasing a commitment to protecting the community from the dangers of substance abuse and trafficking.
