The Fiji Police Force has expressed significant concern over juveniles who continue to re-offend and be labeled as criminals. A recent report indicated that in September, a total of 838 individuals were charged with various offenses, including 48 juveniles.
Among the offenders, those aged 18 to 35 accounted for 486 charges, while 266 offenders were between the ages of 36 and 55. Additionally, 38 individuals charged were over 55 years of age.
Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci emphasized the worrying trend regarding juvenile offenders and its detrimental effects on their education and future prospects. He highlighted the importance of community involvement, urging families and local organizations to mentor and guide young individuals.
Raikaci also brought attention to the troubling involvement of some officers in illegal activities, noting that six police officers were charged in September for various offenses, including abuse of office, assault, obtaining financial advantages through deception, unlawful drug possession, and wrongful confinement. He acknowledged that while officers can sometimes become involved in criminal activities, many also suffer victimization while fulfilling their duties.
He reported that approximately 171 officers were victims of 219 reported incidents, including serious assaults, resisting arrest, and obstruction during the execution of their responsibilities. Raikaci is calling for community cooperation to help tackle illegal activities effectively.
