Chief Justice Salesi Temo was recently observed at the Commission of Inquiry (COI) venue, which is currently in its fourth day at the Old Parliament Complex in Veiuto, Suva. The focus of this inquiry is the contentious appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), a role she commenced on September 5, 2024.

Political analysts and Opposition Members of Parliament are raising concerns about the legitimacy of the appointment process for Ms. Malimali, questioning whether it was influenced by improper or illegal means. When approached for comments, Justice Temo acknowledged, “Probably they have changed the schedule, I’ll have to be informed later,” indicating the fluidity of the inquiry’s timeline. He is set to give his testimony before the COI tomorrow.

The inquiry’s operational schedule has faced challenges, specifically regarding the 35 witnesses lined up, as many have provided detailed testimonies that have extended beyond the original timeframes.

This ongoing inquiry represents a vital step toward enhancing transparency and accountability within Fiji’s governmental structure, particularly within institutions tasked with combating corruption. As the proceedings continue, there is a hopeful outlook that the inquiry will lead to improved clarity and reforms in the appointment process, ultimately contributing to greater public confidence in governance. A commitment to integrity and proper procedures is crucial for the effective functioning of government agencies, and there is optimism that the outcomes of this inquiry will underpin this essential principle.
