Chief Justice Salesi Temo was recently seen at the venue of the ongoing Commission of Inquiry (COI), now in its fourth day at the Old Parliament Complex in Veiuto, Suva. The inquiry is scrutinizing the controversial appointment of Barbara Malimali as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), a position she has held since September 5, 2024.

The circumstances surrounding Ms. Malimali’s appointment have come under fire, with political commentators and Members of Parliament from the Opposition questioning whether the selection process was influenced by improper or illegal means. Justice Temo, when approached for comment, remarked, “Probably they have changed the schedule; I’ll have to be informed later.” He is expected to provide testimony at the COI tomorrow.

The scheduled appearances of the 35 witnesses have encountered delays, as many have been offering lengthy and detailed responses during the proceedings.

This inquiry is of significant importance, reflecting a commitment to accountability and transparency in governmental appointments. There is optimism that the findings may clarify the issues surrounding Ms. Malimali’s appointment and lead to necessary reforms in the process. Strengthening public trust in institutions such as FICAC is crucial, and these proceedings could pave the way for enhanced governance and integrity within the system.
