Chief Justice Salesi Temo was recently seen at the Commission of Inquiry (COI) venue, where proceedings are taking place on the fourth day at the Old Parliament Complex in Veiuto, Suva. The inquiry is focused on the controversial appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), a position she assumed on September 5, 2024.

The appointment has raised eyebrows among political commentators and Opposition Members of Parliament, who are questioning whether the process leading to her selection involved any improper or illegal influence. When approached for a comment, Justice Temo noted, “Probably they have changed the schedule, I’ll have to be informed later.” He is scheduled to appear before the COI tomorrow.

It’s important to note that the timeline for the 35 witnesses has not been strictly adhered to, as many have been providing comprehensive testimony that extends the proceedings.

As the inquiry continues, it showcases the importance of transparency and accountability in public appointments, reinforcing the system of checks and balances that is crucial for public trust.

In summary, this ongoing inquiry highlights the commitment to ensuring that integrity and proper procedures are upheld in the appointments of key positions within government agencies. This situation presents an opportunity for reform and greater scrutiny that could strengthen Fiji’s governance moving forward.
