Christopher Pryde is confirmed to resume his role as Fiji’s Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on January 20, 2025. This follows a ruling from a tribunal that unanimously cleared him of misconduct allegations. The tribunal’s report, submitted to President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu on December 23, 2024, highlighted a lack of substantial evidence supporting the claims against him.

JSC Chairman and Chief Justice Salesi Temo announced on January 13, 2025, that Pryde had communicated his intention to return to duty following the tribunal’s findings. The tribunal, chaired by Justice Anare Tuilevuka, included Justices Chaitanya Lakshman and Samuela Qica, and not only cleared Pryde but also clarified the definition of “misbehaviour” under Fiji’s Constitution. This clarification is expected to aid the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) in evaluating future complaints against judicial officials.

Pryde will return to the terms of his original employment agreement dated September 4, 2019, and he will receive back pay for the time he was suspended, which began on April 13, 2023. To ensure a seamless transition back into his role, he will report to the Chairperson of the JSC for all necessary official items.

This development is viewed as a significant positive step for Fiji’s legal framework, reinforcing the principles of due process and accountability. As Pryde prepares to resume his responsibilities, there is hope that his leadership will enhance the effectiveness and integrity of the DPP’s office, contributing positively to the justice system in Fiji.

In summary, Pryde’s return represents not only a personal vindication but also a reaffirmation of the importance of integrity and transparency in public service, instilling hope for a more stable legal environment moving forward.
