The family of Annyalam Pillay, a 70-year-old priest, is seeking justice following his tragic death in a road accident on the Nadi Back Road. The incident occurred while Mr. Pillay was on his way to deliver flowers to a local temple when he was struck by a vehicle driven by a 43-year-old man. His son, Subramani Pillay, expressed the family’s devastation, stating, “Life won’t be the same without him. He was everything to us.”
Mr. Pillay, who resided in Sigatoka, was reportedly caring for his son Navenithan, who lives with a disability, after the passing of their mother. According to police, it is believed that Mr. Pillay unexpectedly crossed the road before being hit. Despite being transported to Nadi Hospital, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with the driver expected to be questioned. This latest road accident brings the national road death toll to 35, slightly higher than last year’s figure of 32 for the same period, indicating persistent concerns regarding road safety in the region.
This heart-wrenching case brings to light not only the challenges faced by families in mourning but also the need for improved road safety awareness and responsible driving practices in the community. Ensuring safe roadways is a collective responsibility that could prevent future tragedies and provide peace of mind for families.
The Pillay family’s pursuit of justice reflects a broader hope for accountability in road traffic incidents, to help prevent similar losses for other families in the future.
