Two men have been sentenced for their roles in the aggravated robbery of a 57-year-old woman and her disabled son in Samabula. The men, Jashneel Pillay and Mosese Vuniwai, received prison sentences of eight years and five months, and six years and ten months respectively. Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu delivered the verdict at the High Court in Suva, noting the serious nature of the crime committed during the early hours of January 22, 2023.
The court heard that Pillay and Vuniwai, alongside an accomplice, Joseva Tuidama — who has already been sentenced for his part in the incident — invaded the victims’ home with the intention of causing harm and theft. One of the attackers used a cane knife to threaten the woman’s sister-in-law while restraining her to prevent her from calling for help as the others searched the home.
The men attempted to flee the scene using a getaway vehicle but were intercepted by police shortly after the crime. Their sentences come with restrictions as Pillay will be eligible for a pardon only after serving seven years, and Vuniwai after five years.
Both men have been given a 30-day window to appeal the ruling, which highlights the legal system’s commitment to upholding justice. The strong evidence provided by prosecution witnesses and the effective legal proceedings illustrate a dedication to ensuring accountability for acts of violence against vulnerable individuals.
This outcome reinforces the message that such crimes will not be tolerated and serves as a reminder of the importance of safety and security within the community. It offers hope to victims and residents alike that justice is being pursued actively, fostering a sense of safety as the judicial system works to protect individuals from similar violent acts.
