Two men, Mitieli Cama and Finau Bulivolivoli, were sentenced by the High Court in Labasa for the aggravated robbery of a cane farmer, during which more than $11,000 was stolen. The verdict was handed down by Justice Lee James Burney following their conviction of one count each of aggravated robbery and serious assault.
The incident took place on May 28 of the previous year when the victim had just collected a cane payment of $11,773 from the Bank of Baroda. After boarding a bus, the victim was attacked by Cama, who assaulted him from behind and seized his bag containing the significant cash. As the victim attempted to pursue his attacker, he was thrown to the ground, where Bulivolivoli intervened, further injuring him.
Cama was apprehended the next day, found in a vehicle and resisting arrest from police officers, prompting an additional charge. The court sentenced him to four years for aggravated robbery and an extra six months for assaulting a police officer, to be served consecutively, with a non-parole period of three years. Bulivolivoli received a slightly longer sentence of four years and eight months, along with a non-parole period of three years, credited for four months already served while on bail.
Both individuals retain the option to appeal their sentences within the next 30 days.
This case highlights the ongoing concern regarding violent crimes in the community and the judiciary’s commitment to ensuring justice for victims. The court’s strong stance serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of such illicit actions while reinforcing the importance of public safety. It is hoped that the sentencing will contribute to deterring similar crimes in the future, fostering a safer environment for all residents.
