A fifty-year-old man has been convicted by the High Court in Labasa for raping and threatening his then 14-year-old neighbor, leading to her pregnancy. Justice Lee James Burney found the man guilty of one count each of rape and sexual assault after evaluating the victim’s testimony, which he deemed truthful and reliable.

The victim had known the accused for a long time, often referring to him as “uncle.” In October 2023, he allegedly invited her to his home under the pretense of giving her money to buy something at a shop. Once inside, he assaulted her and threatened to kill her if she made noise.

The horrific crime only came to light when the victim’s mother brought her to the hospital, where it was discovered that she was seven to eight months pregnant. The accused maintained that the sexual encounter was consensual, claiming that the victim had been seeking his attention, but the court found his defense lacking credibility.

This case echoes a larger concern within society regarding the safety of minors, particularly in environments where they are supposed to feel secure. It highlights not only the individual case but also ongoing societal issues surrounding sexual violence, stressing the importance of protecting young victims and encouraging them to come forward.

Similarly, other recent convictions in Fiji, such as a man sentenced for raping his teenage cousin and another for abusing his niece, demonstrate the judicial system’s growing resolve to address sexual violence against minors. These verdicts signify a critical shift towards holding offenders accountable and providing a safer environment for young individuals, ultimately fostering a society that prioritizes justice and the protection of its most vulnerable members.

The hope moving forward is that these legal outcomes will encourage more victims to speak out and receive the support they need, and work towards a systemic change that effectively safeguards children against such dreadful acts.
