A businessman has been convicted of raping his stepdaughter over six years, as ruled by Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull at the Suva High Court. The man faced eight charges of rape, after one count was dropped due to insufficient evidence. The victim, who came to Fiji from the UK with her mother and younger brother in 2008, began living with the accused in 2010.

Prior to the trial’s continuation on Monday, the accused opted to take responsibility by pleading guilty to the charges and acknowledged the facts presented in court. Following the ruling, Justice Bull revoked the man’s bail and ordered him to be held in custody.

The prosecution was represented by lawyers Shaheen Bibi and Unaisi Ratukalou, while Gavin O’Driscoll defended the accused. The court has scheduled the sentencing hearing, including mitigation discussions, for tomorrow.

It is crucial to recognize that the conviction brings a sense of justice to the victim and highlights the importance of addressing such serious crimes. The legal proceedings serve as a reminder of the commitment to protect vulnerable individuals and seek justice for those who have suffered.

This case emphasizes the significance of vigilance and support for survivors of abuse, reinforcing the message that justice can prevail, and communities stand behind those who have experienced trauma.
