After 33 years of seeking justice, families of the Vatukoula gold miners who participated in the 1991 strike have been awarded $3.6 million by the Coalition Government. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka presented this initial payment, providing each miner and their family with $10,000.
During a meeting with miners’ representatives and government officials, Mr. Rabuka expressed his apologies for the ongoing difficulties stemming from the unresolved strike, which could have been addressed during his leadership 33 years ago, when he served as interim prime minister following the 1987 coup.
“I was part of the group that could have resolved the issue at that time, and as we reflect on this long journey today, I want to extend my heartfelt apology to the workers and their dependents for the extended wait,” Mr. Rabuka stated.
He acknowledged the pain and suffering endured by the miners and recognized the sacrifices made by those who remained steadfast in their support of the Vatukoula workers. The second payment, in which each miner will receive $15,000, is scheduled to be distributed in the upcoming 2025-2026 Government budget.
