Justice Qetaki Takes the Helm: A New Era for Fiji’s Court of Appeal

Justice Alipate Qetaki has officially taken on his duties as Fiji’s Acting Resident Justice of Appeal as he was sworn in today at a ceremony at State House. The swearing-in was conducted by President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, and was attended by Chief Justice Salesi Temo, ministers of justice, and members of the judiciary, along with Justice Qetaki’s family.

With a legal career spanning approximately 47 years, Justice Qetaki is recognized for his significant contributions to law, administration, and management. His journey in the legal domain began with his studies at Victoria University in Wellington, culminating in a Bachelor of Law in 1975, followed by a Master of Laws from the University of Edinburgh in 1990 focused on administrative and comparative constitutional law.

Before this latest appointment, Justice Qetaki served as an Ad Hoc Justice of Appeal since April 2023, engaging in both the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court. His previous experience includes a three-year tenure as a lecturer at the University of Fiji, where he taught various legal subjects including Constitutional Law and Legislative Drafting.

Additionally, Justice Qetaki has held numerous influential roles, including serving as the General Manager of the Native Land Trust Board and the first Permanent Secretary for Justice. His dedication to Fiji’s legal framework and commitment to the rule of law position him well for this new role.

This addition to Fiji’s judiciary reflects a continuous effort to strengthen the legal system in the nation. The appointment of experienced justices like Qetaki brings a hopeful perspective for the judiciary’s future and its capacity to uphold justice effectively.
