The courtroom erupted with emotion as family members confronted Tevita Kapawale, convicted of a brutal murder spree aboard the FV Tiro 2 in Fiji. The heinous acts, committed in the early hours of May 18, 2021, resulted in the deaths of two Fijians, Alfat Kodri and Qiritavabea Cagilabakomeli, who were attacked with an axe, alongside three Indonesian crew members who were forced to jump overboard.

During the emotional proceedings, family members expressed their anguish. Kelevi Vakuruivalu, brother of one of the victims, urged Kapawale to suffer for his inhumane actions, while Samuela Sukera’s wife shared her struggles raising their young son since the tragedy. Survivor Kaminieli Tucama revealed the lasting impact of the ordeal on his life, struggling to find employment and facing a fear of returning to the sea.

The prosecution, led by State Counsel Triveshni Sharma, is pursuing a life sentence with a minimum of 40 to 50 years, emphasizing Kapawale’s lack of remorse and the unprovoked nature of his actions. Despite his lawyer expressing concerns about the harshness of the proposed sentencing guidelines, the judge remains focused on the severity of the crimes, which include the attempted murder of Tucama and intimidation of Mitieli Cama, the lone survivors of this tragedy.

Kapawale’s sentencing is scheduled for August 12, a pivotal moment that the affected families hope will usher in a sense of justice. This case has also sparked discussions about improving maritime safety regulations to protect those who venture into the sea. The community expresses a collective wish for accountability, aiming to prevent future tragedies at sea.

This tragic incident serves not only as a reminder of the critical issues of safety and criminal justice but also has galvanized hopes for systemic improvements that enhance protections for all seafarers, paving the way for a more secure maritime environment in Fiji.
