Vilikesa Bari, a 21-year-old final year marine engineering student at the Fiji Maritime Academy, is calling for justice after allegedly being assaulted by a police officer in Nausori last Saturday night. He is currently hospitalized at Wainibokasi Hospital, recovering from serious injuries including a broken jaw, which required surgery.
Bari had just finished his exams and was preparing for a mandatory six-month seagoing service crucial for his graduation when this incident occurred. Unfortunately, his recovery process may delay his plans, as he has been informed he will only be able to consume liquid meals for a while.
Describing the incident, Bari recounted that he and his brother were waiting for a ride home after a family event when they witnessed a fight. He said that when he tapped a nearby officer on the shoulder to alert him about the altercation, the officer took offense and subsequently assaulted him. Bari claimed that the officer used a torch to hit him before taking him to a reporting area, where the assault continued.
Another officer eventually intervened, and Bari requested to be taken to the hospital due to his injuries. The accused officer reportedly visited Bari twice in the hospital, acknowledging that he was under stress but failing to take responsibility for his actions.
Bari’s mother, Unaisi Qionimacawa, expressed her shock and fear over the incident, emphasizing the fragility of life and her gratitude that her son survived. She pledged to support Bari in seeking justice.
In response to the allegations, Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew has initiated an investigation into the matter, promising the community that the inquiry will be thorough. He emphasized the need for law enforcement officers to uphold the law and act responsibly in their duties.
This incident highlights the importance of accountability and the need for trust between the community and law enforcement. It is hopeful that the investigation will lead to justice being served and prevent further occurrences of violence in similar situations. Vilikesa Bari’s courage in seeking justice may pave the way for greater protections for individuals in the future.
