Vilikesa Bari, a 21-year-old marine engineering student at the Fiji Maritime Academy, is advocating for justice following an alleged assault by a police officer in Nausori last Saturday night. Bari was hospitalized at Wainibokasi Hospital for injuries from the reported attack, including a broken jaw that required surgery. This incident has delayed his anticipated six-month seagoing service, which is a crucial step towards graduation.
Bari recounted that he and his brother were waiting for transportation after a family event when a nearby altercation occurred. When he approached a police officer for assistance, an exchange escalated, leading to the officer allegedly assaulting him with a flashlight and further punching him once taken to the reporting area. It was only when another officer intervened that the assault ceased.
Despite the trauma he endured, Bari expressed hope that the legal system would provide justice to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. He shared his feelings about the situation, recounting conversations with the officer who visited him in the hospital, who claimed to be under stress and did not believe Bari was at fault.
Bari’s mother, Unaisi Qionimacawa, expressed her shock and gratitude that her son survived the ordeal, recognizing the potential for a much worse outcome. She pledged to support him if he chooses to pursue justice.
In response to the allegations, Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew announced that a thorough investigation into the matter would take place, emphasizing that police officers must adhere to the rule of law in all circumstances.
This incident underscores the importance of accountability within law enforcement and highlights the need for a supportive community that seeks justice and transparency. As Vilikesa Bari embarks on his recovery journey, his resilience and pursuit of justice may inspire others facing similar challenges.
Overall, the tragic situation also serves as a reminder of the resilience of families and communities as they navigate the complexities of justice and healing.
