A 54-year-old man, previously convicted of raping his nine-year-old grandniece in 2022, is currently awaiting sentencing after a court hearing in Suva was postponed to Friday. During this hearing, the man’s lawyer, Tobia Ravuniwa from the Legal Aid Commission, requested extra time to prepare his case.
Initially facing two counts of rape, Justice Dane Tuiqereqere acquitted the man of one charge related to incidents alleged to have occurred between February 1 and 28, 2022. The victim, who is now 11 years old, recounted that the assaults took place when the man allegedly seized her while she was getting her shoes and later in a bedroom after she returned home from school on August 28.
Shaheen Bibi, representing the state, emphasized the significance of this case in shedding light on the ongoing issues surrounding sexual violence, particularly within familial settings. This case mirrors others involving family members charged with similar offenses against minors, highlighting the urgent need for advocacy and a robust judicial response to protect vulnerable victims.
The extension of bail for the accused reflects a thoughtful approach by the legal system to carefully balance the rights of the defendant with the imperative of ensuring the safety of victims. This ongoing legal process instills hope for justice to be served and underscores the importance of support for victims as they work towards healing and regaining control over their lives. The proceedings are adjourned until March 21, allowing both the defense and prosecution to prepare further.
This case serves as a crucial reminder of the need for continued efforts to combat sexual violence and protect children within their families and communities.
