The Ministry of Justice is currently addressing significant delays in death registrations, as highlighted in recent discussions with the Standing Committee on Justice, Law, and Human Rights. Senior workforce officer, Lavenia Navolaca, provided insights into the matter during her presentation of the ministry’s consolidated annual reports for the years 2019 to 2022 in Suva.

The committee raised concerns regarding the registration of 4,142 deaths within the reported timeframe and sought clarification on the reasons behind these delays. Ms. Navolaca outlined various contributing factors, including a lack of public awareness about the legal necessities for timely death registration. She noted that individuals often do not realize the importance of registering a death promptly.

Additionally, geographical challenges pose obstacles, particularly for residents in remote areas who struggle to access registration services. Administrative delays also play a role, as the timely submission of essential documents, like medical certificates, is sometimes lacking. Cultural traditions further complicate the issue, with some families postponing registrations due to observance of mourning practices.

To tackle these challenges, the Ministry is implementing initiatives focused on increasing public awareness regarding the importance of prompt registration and enhancing access to registration services. This proactive approach aims to reduce delays and streamline the process in the coming years.

In summary, while the Ministry of Justice faces significant hurdles with delayed death registrations, it is actively working on solutions to address these issues. Through increased public awareness and improved access to services, there is hope for a more efficient system that can better serve the community’s needs.

This situation underscores the importance of community engagement and education in the realm of legal requirements, highlighting a commitment to improving public services and fostering a more informed citizenry.
