Justice Ministry Faces Rising Complaints: Is Reform on the Horizon?

The Ministry of Justice has recorded a total of 131 complaints concerning its services, including those provided by Justices of the Peace (JPs) across the country. The complaints primarily originated from inquiries related to processes like registration, family relative searches, title searches, and business applications.

Justice Minister Siromi Turaga responded to a written inquiry from Opposition MP Ketan Lal regarding the types and volume of complaints throughout 2024. The Minister acknowledged that many of the issues stemmed from confusion surrounding the procedures needed for various services, which is compounded by frequent technical difficulties affecting the online systems E-ROC and E-BDM.

Turaga highlighted a particular concern that changes made by a previous administration regarding name changes for spouses have disproportionately affected married women, creating additional burdens on them. He noted that many members of the public lack awareness of the necessary documentation and requirements, which contributes to the volume of complaints received. The complaints also touch on the perceived unprofessional behavior of some Justices of the Peace.

This situation comes amid a backdrop of scrutiny directed at Turaga, with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka acknowledging informal complaints that include accusations of nepotism and inefficiency within the Ministry. Although there are no formal complaints registered, these concerns indicate a pressing need for the ministry to enhance its service delivery and restore trust among the public.

The ongoing challenges within the justice system present a genuine opportunity for reform. By addressing these complaints and enhancing service efficiency, the Ministry of Justice can reinforce public confidence in the nation’s legal framework. There is hope that through these efforts, improvements will be made that will not only meet the current demands but also ensure a robust and transparent governance structure in Fiji moving forward.
