Justice Ministry Faces Challenges in Death Registration Delays

Spread the love

The Ministry of Justice is currently grappling with challenges related to the timely registration of deaths, a situation brought to light during recent discussions with the Standing Committee on Justice, Law, and Human Rights in Suva. During analyses of the ministry’s consolidated annual reports from 2019 to 2022, senior workforce officer Lavenia Navolaca addressed concerns regarding the registration of 4,142 deaths during that period and the reasons behind the delays.

Navolaca attributed these delays to several key factors. A significant issue is the lack of awareness among the public regarding the legal obligations to register deaths promptly. Additionally, residents in remote and rural regions often struggle to access necessary registration services. There are also administrative delays that arise from the late submission of required documentation, such as medical certificates. Furthermore, cultural practices can contribute to this issue, as some families may postpone registration in observance of traditional mourning periods.

In response to these challenges, the Ministry of Justice is actively working on initiatives to enhance public awareness about the importance of timely death registration and improve access to registration services. They are optimistic about making significant progress in this area in the coming years.

This situation highlights not only the challenges faced by the ministry but also their commitment to addressing these issues to benefit the community. Increased awareness and accessibility can ultimately lead to better compliance with registration laws and ensure that families are supported during their times of loss.

In summary, the Ministry of Justice recognizes the barriers to timely death registrations and is taking proactive steps to overcome them while fostering public understanding of the registration process.
