The Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga, has once again highlighted the role of the media in discussions surrounding sensitive governance matters. He was prompted to comment on the ongoing controversy regarding the appointment of Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner, Barbara Malimali, known as the Barbara-Gate saga—a topic that has drawn significant criticism from various government figures, including former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry and Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu.

The critics have raised concerns over what they perceive as the government’s lax approach towards the allegations surrounding Malimali, including claims of abuse of office, intimidation of witnesses, and bullying of the Supervisor of Elections, Ana Mataiciwa. Additionally, there are inquiries into the circumstances of a break-in at the FICAC headquarters in Suva.

Minister Turaga urged respect for the legal system, noting that a tribunal is currently in place, appointed by the President on the Prime Minister’s advice, to investigate the issues related to the FICAC Commissioner’s appointment. He mentioned that the tribunal, which he has engaged with, is expected to conclude its work by the end of January.

In a notable remark, Mr. Turaga expressed concern over the media’s reporting of the Barbara-Gate saga, suggesting that partial information could mislead the public. He emphasized the importance of comprehensive reporting, stating that incomplete coverage can create confusion, particularly among those not fully aware of the situation.

This situation underscores the delicate balance between media scrutiny and the legal processes in place, highlighting the need for clarity and responsibility in reporting. As the tribunal proceeds with its investigation, there is hope that a thorough and fair resolution will emerge, bringing clarity to the involved parties and the public alike. The emphasis on due legal process reflects a commitment to accountability, potentially restoring public trust in governance structures.
