The Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga, is urging parents to ensure their children are registered at the Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) Registry ahead of the upcoming school year. During his recent visit to Bua, he launched BDM services at various locations, including the Post Fiji Shop in Kubulau, Wainunu, Lekutu, and Nabouwalu.
Mr. Turaga emphasized the importance of parental responsibility in registering their children, stating, “Every child born on this earth comes from a family, a mother and a father.” He noted that the recent shift towards decentralizing BDM services aims to make registration easier for families. The ministry’s officials identified that many children remain unregistered due to a lack of awareness, apathy, or sometimes financial constraints.
The Minister explained that ensuring all children are registered is critical for effective policy-making. Accurate registration allows the government to understand the demographics of the population, leading to better planning and resource allocation. With the new services available locally, there is no longer a need for residents of Bua to travel to larger towns like Savusavu or Labasa.
This initiative not only facilitates easier access to vital services but also highlights the government’s commitment to improving citizen welfare through better record-keeping and planning.
In summary, the call for children’s registration is a step towards enhancing community awareness and engagement with government services, ultimately fostering a more organized approach to planning for the future. It’s an optimistic move that empowers families and reinforces the vital role they play in society.
