Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has indicated that he is still waiting for a proper explanation from Justice Minister Siromi Turaga regarding the recent suspension of Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, the Commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service. This move by Turaga has been criticized and perceived by some as a potential abuse of power. Following the announcement by Turaga placing Dr. Nakarawa on leave due to alleged breaches, the Prime Minister clarified that Nakarawa has returned to his duties.

Turaga had previously stated that there were serious incidents necessitating an immediate investigation into the governance, conduct, and administration within the Fiji Corrections Service. However, Rabuka pointed out that Turaga acted without consulting him before making the suspension decision.

When asked about perceived double standards in the treatment of the former Minister for Women and Children, Lynda Tabuya, compared to that of Turaga, Rabuka opted not to comment but confirmed he is seeking clarification on the issue. Despite there being no formal complaints against Turaga, Rabuka does not plan to impose any penalties on him for this constitutional oversight.

Former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum criticized Turaga’s actions as legally flawed, referencing Section 130(4) of the Fijian Constitution, which assigns the responsibility for appointing and disciplining constitutional officials, like the Commissioner, to the President, not the Minister. Sayed-Khaiyum emphasized that Turaga’s approach undermines due process and interferes with the authority of the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC).

Opposition MP Ketan Lal expressed concerns about the lack of transparency regarding Dr. Nakarawa’s suspension, suggesting that it could erode public trust in the government’s institutions. Both Sayed-Khaiyum and Lal have called for accountability and clarity from the government on this matter.

As this situation evolves, it presents a crucial opportunity for the Fijian government to reaffirm its commitment to upholding constitutional integrity and fostering transparency. By addressing these governance issues with clarity and respect for legal procedures, the Prime Minister and his Cabinet can work towards rebuilding public trust and ensuring a robust democratic framework in Fiji.

In summary, the incident highlights the need for clear governance and accountability in Fiji, illustrating the importance of adhering to constitutional processes. While challenges remain, there is a hopeful prospect for reform that could strengthen institutions and public confidence in the government.
