Justice Isikeli Mataitoga has officially been appointed as the President of the Court of Appeal in Fiji, following his oath of office taken today at State House. Justice Mataitoga has been fulfilling the role in an acting capacity since October 3, 2024.
With an impressive background in diplomacy, Justice Mataitoga has previously held various significant positions, including that of Fiji’s Ambassador to Australia, Singapore, the European Union, the World Trade Organization, UNESCO, and FAO. He was also the Ambassador to Japan, with accreditation in several countries, showcasing his extensive diplomatic experience.
In addition to his diplomatic endeavors, Mataitoga has served in vital roles within the Fijian government, including as Solicitor General from 1993 to 1996, Chief Executive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2004 to 2007, and Director of Public Prosecutions from 1989 to 1993.
His appointment is seen as a positive development for Fiji’s judiciary, where he is expected to bring his wealth of experience and leadership to strengthen the legal system further. The judiciary’s recent appointments, including those of Justice Salesi Temo as Chief Justice and Justice Alipate Qetaki as Acting Resident Justice of Appeal, indicate a robust effort to enhance Fiji’s legal framework.
