Justice Finally Served: Tavua’s Longest Land Lease in History Reconsidered

Spread the love

For many years, the mataqali Tilivasewa community in Tavua has fought for justice regarding their land, which was leased for an unprecedented 999 years to a tenant in Toko, Tavua in 1907. This long-standing issue, one of the most considerable leases in Fiji’s history, has now seen new developments.

In July 2023, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka assured the mataqali Tilivasewa that the government would thoroughly investigate their claims about the extensive lease. Recently, the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) announced its decision to surrender this contentious 999-year lease, marking a significant milestone for the community.

Peniasi Vauvau, the headman of mataqali Tilivasewa, expressed immense relief in an interview. He noted that the community has been awaiting a resolution for decades, with many ancestors having passed away before they could see these matters addressed. Vauvau expressed gratitude towards the Coalition Government for finally discussing and resolving the land issues, highlighting the need for a new lease agreement that would fairly accommodate the current tenants who occupy the land.

TLTB plans to engage in discussions with the mataqali Tilivasewa to negotiate appropriate lease terms for the tenants, indicating a proactive approach to rectify past grievances surrounding land use. Approximately 500 members belong to mataqali Tilivasewa, and their voices must be central in the upcoming meetings to ensure a collaborative decision-making process.

This commitment to resolving historical land lease issues resonates with broader trends observed in Fiji regarding agricultural and land lease management. Awareness and corrective actions surrounding these issues are crucial for sustainable community development and strengthening the rights of landowners.

In summary, the steps taken by TLTB and the government promise a brighter future for the mataqali Tilivasewa community, as they work toward the equitable use of their ancestral land. This resolution symbolizes hope not only for the Tilivasewa but also sets a precedent for other communities grappling with similar challenges.
