Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his congratulations to Justice Filimone Jitoko on his recent appointment as the new Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Fiji. Rabuka commented on Justice Jitoko’s impressive career and extensive experience that he brings to this significant position.
Justice Jitoko, a graduate of the University of the South Pacific in 1969, subsequently obtained his Bachelor of Laws from Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand. He was admitted to the New Zealand Bar in 1978, highlighting the foundation of his legal expertise. His professional journey features remarkable achievements in diplomacy and law. In 1980, he completed courses in Multilateral Negotiations in New York and International Diplomacy in Washington, D.C., before taking on the role of Secretary to Fiji’s Missions in these cities. Returning to Fiji, he served as Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court from 1985 to 1987.
Later, Mr. Jitoko was appointed as Solicitor General for the Fiji Government, a position he held for six years. He then became the Secretary to the Cabinet from 1993 to 1996, which laid the groundwork for his diplomatic career, where he represented Fiji as Ambassador to various countries, including Israel, Brussels, and Denmark.
In 2002, he returned to Fiji to serve as a High Court Judge until 2009. His international contributions didn’t stop there; he also held the role of Chief Justice of the Nauru Supreme Court from 2000 to 2017 and took on the role of Registrar from 2015 to 2017.
Rabuka conveyed his confidence that Justice Jitoko’s vast experience and expertise will enable him to excel in his new role as Speaker of Parliament, furthering the interests of Fiji.
This appointment reflects a commitment to strong leadership in Fiji’s governance and highlights the importance of experienced individuals in key positions. The nation looks forward to potential progress under Justice Jitoko’s guidance as he steps into this pivotal role with a wealth of knowledge and a track record of public service.
