A 19-year-old student from a school in Tailevu has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for sexual offenses against a younger student. The court has set a non-parole period of seven years and ten months for the offender, who was charged with two counts of sexual assault and one count of rape.
Justice Usaia Ratuvili delivered the verdict in the High Court in Suva, noting that the accused, who is in his final year of high school, committed the crimes against a 16-year-old junior student. The incident took place in a toilet cubicle at the school’s dormitory on November 12, 2022.
Justice Ratuvili emphasized the need for a strong deterrent sentence to protect children from sexual offenses, particularly within school environments. He remarked that schools should be safe havens for children, especially in boarding schools where staff are entrusted with their care.
The judge highlighted that teachers have a responsibility to look after students outside of school hours as well, ensuring their safety, nutrition, and a supportive environment for learning. He noted that the offenses violated school rules designed to keep students secure, as the accused entered areas designated for junior students without permission.
The court aims to send a clear message to potential offenders while allowing the opportunity for rehabilitation.
